Based on the predictions from his doctors it is unlikely that Historian Angelo Bissessarsingh will live to see the publication of his fourth book Folklore and Mythology.
The researcher/historian took a turn for the worse, according to his family, over the weekend and has slipped into unconsciousness, as his battle with pancreatic cancer nears the end.
Apart from the three books - Walking with the Ancestors—The Historic Cemeteries of Trinidad; Snapshots of the History of Trinidad and Tobago; Virtual Glimpses into the Past; and Pancho’s Dilemma, he has a fourth which is due in the middle of next month. Angelo also has an incomplete manuscript of short stories.  He is the founder of the Virtual Museum of Trinidad and Tobago.  Source: 107.7 Music for Life

A leading member of the Commonwealth Youth Council has become the youngest ever senator in Trinidad and Tobago’s history. Nikoli Edwards, aged 25, was sworn in as a temporary independent senator by the country’s President, Anthony Carmona on 11 January 2017.
In his maiden speech to the Senate, Mr Edwards spoke of the importance of young people having a voice in creating national legislation.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to say how grateful I am to be addressing this honourable chamber,” Mr Edwards said. “For me, and to many other young people across Trinidad and Tobago, this signals hope. It signals that there is in fact opportunity for young people.”
The young senator was speaking during a Senate debate on the Miscellaneous Provisions (Marriage) Bill 2016, during which he argued passionately against early marriage.
In Trinidad and Tobago’s Senate, independent senators are selected by the President as representatives of civil society. Mr Edwards was appointed as a temporary senator while a permanent senator is out of the country.
In a statement, Mr Edwards said, “By allowing a youth voice to occupy the independent bench of the Senate, my appointment has demonstrated the commitment by President Carmona to the youth of Trinidad and Tobago.
“I hope to bring a youth and civil society perspective to the Senate that is informed by my interactions with many youth organisations and individuals across the country and the Commonwealth.”
Mr Edwards was elected to the Commonwealth Youth Council in November 2015 and serves as Vice Chair for Policy, Advocacy and Projects. He is also founder and chairman of the Trinidad and Tobago Youth Convention.
Katherine Ellis, Director of Youth at the Commonwealth Secretariat, said, "Nikoli is to be congratulated on his achievement. It is wonderful to see the passion with which he is already advocating on issues that are important to young people.
“We hope to see more Commonwealth young leaders moving into positions where they can directly influence policy in their countries."

Wow, the girls rocked this year, taking the lion’s share of President’s Medals, with five girls winning gold and silver medals and one boy, Michael Beepath, winning a silver medal.
Six students received their medals from President Anthony Carmona at yesterday’s presentation ceremony for the 2016 Awards of National Scholarships and Awards System (Incentives to Excellence) at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA), Port-of-Spain. Congratulations to all these young people - and to the parents and teachers.  Was so glad to see a student from my old alma mater (St. Joseph's Convent) winning a gold medal!
The medal winners are as follows:
Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE)
GOLD: Priya Maraj (Lakshmi Girls Hindu College)
GOLD: Raquel Le Blanc (St Joseph's Convent, Port of Spain)
Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC)
GOLD: Nejev Polo (St Francois Girls College)
SILVER: Sharnavi Sagramsingh (Naparima Girls High School)
Secondary Entrance Exam (SEA)
GOLD: Caitlin Brooker (San Fernando TML)
SILVER: Michael Beepath (Avocat Vedic Primary)

t&T peppers are the hottest in the world

Until 2012, the Ghost Pepper was thought to be the  world’s hottest pepper, but that was shattered when the Trinidad Moruga “Scorpion” pepper was rated the hottest pepper in the world at 1.2 million Scoville units.  The New Mexico State University — the only international, non-profit scientific organization devoted to education and research related to Capsicum or chili peppers — tested the pepper, which ranks as high as 2,009,231 SHU on the Scoville scale! Sure gives the song Hot! Hot! Hot! new meaning for us!

Kudos to trini author  VS Naipaul by President Obama

Was wonderful to read in the New York Times this week that President Obama has credited Trinidadian author VS Naipaul as one of the writers who influences his own writing and perspectives. Although not in agreement with  his political views, Naipaul’s perspective impels him to try to refute them.
“I think that there are writers who I don’t necessarily agree with in terms of their politics, but whose writings are sort of a baseline for how to think about certain things — V. S. Naipaul, for example. His “A Bend in the River,” which starts with the line, “The world is what it is; men who are nothing, who allow themselves to become nothing, have no place in it.”
“I always think about that line, and I think about his novels when I’m thinking about the hardness of the world sometimes, particularly in foreign policy, and I resist and fight against sometimes that very cynical, more realistic view of the world.”
“And yet, there are times where it feels as if that may be true.”
“So in that sense, I’m using writing like that as a foil or something to debate against.”
Obama was speaking on major writers and books that influenced him , adding that he used writing as a way to rebuild himself, after feeling like an outsider as a child.
“I loved reading when I was a kid, partly because I was traveling so much, and there were times where I’d be displaced, I’d be the outsider.”
“I think rediscovered writing and reading and thinking in my first or second year of college and used that as a way to rebuild myself, a process I write about in “Dreams From My Father”,”
he said.
He also credited the works of Shakespeare, Toni Morrison and Colombian novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
Sir Vidiadhar Surajprasad Naipaul won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2001 and is known for his comic early novels set in Trinidad and Tobago, his bleaker later novels of the wider world, and his autobiographical chronicles of life and travels.
Naipaul was born in Trinidad and Tobago in 1932 and migrated to the UK in 1954.
He has published more than 30 books, both of fiction and nonfiction, over some 50 years.
Naipaul was made a knight in the 1990 New Year Honours.

Did you know that our own Soca superstar Machel Montano is the first ever recipient of the Barbados Independent Film Festival Digicel Award?  Yes, he was honoured on January 11th at the opening gala of the inaugural Barbados Independent Film Festival (BIFF) for his work in the 2016 indie film, Bazodee.
The award was presented by Stephen Lang, US actor and screenwriter, who said the artiste
artiste had a bright future ahead in film:“He’s got it in him to have as surprising, as stunning, as creative a career as an actor as he has had up ‘til now as a songwriter, as a producer and as an artist.”
Noting that it was important to nurture young talent in the film industry, Montano also highlighted the importance of Caribbean unity and seeing Caribbean stories on the big screen.
“This is a time when technology is on the rise – young people love to create,” Montano observed. “But most importantly, we have to tell Caribbean stories.”
“We hardly see our stories on the silver screen. Telling stories is about sharing – sharing who we are. People from the Caribbean have an important role and story to share with the world. We were brought here from all over the place and crammed into these… small spaces to exist. And we have found some way to love each other’s traditions equally as much as we love our own…”
Congratulations on the win!!   Enjoy this clip of one his songs from the movie.
