Founded in 1983, the Trinidad and Tobago Association of Ottawa (TTAO) is a vibrant, community-based non-profit organization serving the National Capital Region. TTAO celebrates and preserves the rich cultural heritage of Trinidad and Tobago while supporting the development, connection, and integration of nationals within Canadian society.

Celebrating World Steelpan Day

Today, August 11, we celebrate World Steelpan Day and honour Trinidad and Tobago’s national instrument—the steelpan, the only new acoustic musical instrument invented in the 20th century. Born in Trinidad and Tobago during the 1930s from everyday materials such as oil drums and metal containers, the steelpan emerged as a powerful expression of creativity, resilience, cultural pride and community spirit. From local panyards to concert halls around the world, its distinctive sound continues to inspire audiences and connect generations. World Steelpan Day is also an opportunity to honour the pioneers, tuners, pannists, arrangers, builders and communities whose passion carried the pan from humble beginnings to the global stage. More than an instrument, the steelpan is a living musical legacy—an enduring symbol of innovation, artistic excellence and the unmistakable spirit of Trinbago. Today, we celebrate the sweet sound, rich history and powerful legacy of the steelpan: a creation born in Trinidad and Tobago that the world has come to know and love.
