about us

Founded in 1983, the Trinidad and Tobago Association of Ottawa (TTAO) is a vibrant, community-based, non-profit organization serving the National Capital Region in Canada. Its mission is to promote and preserve the cultural heritage of Trinidad and Tobago while supporting the development and integration of nationals within the broader Canadian society. The TTAO plays a vital role in fostering community spirit through a wide range of cultural, educational, and social initiatives. These include events for occasions such as Independence Day, Indian Arrival Day, Emancipation Day, and Trinbago Day. There are also smaller events like comedy nights, Parang events around the holidays and more to keep the community connected so everyone feels supported. The association supports local Caribbean businesses and authors, and often fundraises for organizations in Trinidad and Tobago. A cornerstone of TTAO’s work is its scholarship program, which recognizes those of Caribbean descent who have achieved academic excellence and community involvement. In 2024, the association awarded scholarships to five outstanding students, including those pursuing studies in sociology, health, photography, and rehabilitation sciences. These awards not only celebrate achievement but also empower recipients to contribute meaningfully to their communities. The TTAO maintains strong ties with other Caribbean organizations across Canada and collaborates with the High Commission of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Ottawa, Canada. The association continues to be a beacon of cultural pride, inclusivity, and service. The TTAO is managed by an Executive Committee, led by President Indira Thackorie and is governed by the Association's Constitution, created in 1989.
